As far back as the Old Stone Age, men made jewelry. In their cave dwellings they fashioned amulets and necklaces of teeth and animal bones to ward off evil spirits. By Babylonian times, men had learned to work with gold, and jewelry making had become a craft. The Sumerian jewelers had their workshops withi8n the temple grounds. Jewelers in ancient Egypt developed jewelry enamels, or cloisonne and produced magnificent gold and silver pieces. The Etruscans have have never been equaled in their work of granulations.
The ancient Greeks worked chiefly in enamel and in filigree - gold silver wire shaped into lacelike openwork. Jewelers of the Roman Empire added gems to gold and silver pieces. Enameling and heavy design characterized the elaborate Byzantine Jewelry.
